Making a Basic Guise

Here is a step by step guide for how to create a basic photo based guise.

  • Open the uvlayout.png template file in a photo editing software package.
  • On a new layer create a solid grey or black background. This makes viewing the uv guide easyer.

  • Save the new guise file (psd if using photoshop), keeping the layers so you can make easy edits.
  • Open a high res photo you wish to use (Photo's should be front on portrait views with the eyes closed).

  • Select only the face area including the forehead and chin and paste it into a layer in the new guise file.
  • using the free transform tool or equivalent, scale the pasted face to fit the uv layout as best you can.

  • At this point you can start to name the layers. if it isn't already, move the generic layer under the face layer.

  • Select the face layer, using the colour picker, select a neutral mid range skin colour (forehead or edge of eye).
  • Then select the generic layer, select ONLY the grey part.
  • Then on a new layer, paint bucket fill the selection with the skin colour selected

  • Select the layer with the face photo. Using the eraser tool with a soft edge (opacity 30-40% works well) brush away the parts of the face you do not want. Hair and dark shadows should be removed where possible.

  • Using a combination of the warp, free transform and clone stamp tools you can start cutting up the photo face to make the eyes, nostrils and mouth better align to the uv layout. Specific photo manipulation tutorials can easily be found on the internet.

  • Beyond this point the refining and adding of detail to make better guises is down to practice and familiarity with photo manipulation and digital painting.
  • To export the file and test on InYaFace as you go make sure to hide any reference and uv layout layers, including the background. Then save the file as a png to preserve the transparency. Make sure to keep your working file with layers separate so you can continue working on it.
