Overview

The quality of your compressed air supply is crucial, if you are using a silent type compressor with an oil reservoir, (Jun Air Model J 6-25 or similar), make sure that it is kept cool and runs below 50% duty cycle. If you see any signs of oil contamination in tubing (discoloured tubes etc), replace the filter element in the filter regulator unit as per the compressor instructions.

As an additional precaution a micro mist separator (SMC AFD20-02-A) should be installed in-line using a suitable adaptor (e.g. a Barrel Connector with R1/4 thread)

When the Norgren combined pressure regulator / filter needs replacing, we recommend using an SMC AW20-F02E-B (Filter Regulator 1/4 ported, complete with built in gauge) with an AF20P-060S Filter Element.

Pre-fitting instructions

1. Check for and drain any condensate from the system

See Compressor - draining condensate. This should be done regularly.

2. Shut off air from the compressor and drain any air

Switch off compressor at the mains. Shut off the air from the compressor - rotate shut-off valve to OFF position (see markings on valve)

Empty any air trapped between compressor and robot: Close the blue shut-off valve on the airline.

Disconnect the robot's air line - push the blue ring of the valve back towards the valve's body and pull the robot's air line out.

Open the blue shut-off valve briefly to release any pressure. Direct the valve away from any people. You should hear air escaping for a moment. You can re-insert the air line to the robot.

3. Fit Micro Mist Separator

The micro mist separator is fitted downstream from the filter-regulator.

Remove the elbow fitting from the filter regulator.

Wrap a few rotations of PTFE tape around the barrel nipple and screw the nipple a few turns into the filter regulator.

The inlet side of the micro mist separator is marked with an arrow. Screw this end of the micro mist separator onto the barrel nipple. Tighten the micro mist separator until the air tight. The micro mist separator must be approximately vertical to function correctly.

Reconnect the airline to the robot. Open the shut-off valve on the compressor and switch on the compressor.

Check the micro mist separator for oil residue. Replace the separator element when required.
